XO2 Folding Scooter

With electric vehicles become more and more common, the XO2 electric scooter shouldn’t surprise anyone based on it being powered by electric. One of the more interesting features of this electric scooter is that you can fold it up and bring it in to your apartment for charging. Granted it’s still pretty big when it’s folded, but if you’re going to keep it in your house to keep it away from the thieves, you’ll be grateful that it can shrink itself a little. The scooter sports between 60km/h for the XO2 50 Urban and 105km/h for the XO2 125 Urban. You’ll be able to charge the scooter to about 80% within a few hours, and get about 50-70km out of it. There isn’t any information on pricing or availability just yet, but stay tuned, and we’ll update you as soon as we get wind of those details.

Ferrari-styled OutRun arcade machine set for crazy scooter transformation?

If you're a child of the '80s and a gamer to boot you surely remember OutRun, the game that rocked a generation with only some parallax effects and pixelated blonde hair -- though the giant arcade cabinet with gold wheels certainly didn't hurt. Now "contemporary artist" Garnet Hertz (creator of the twitching, crunchy frog server) is proposing to give that very cabinet a new lease on life, and a motorized one at that. Hertz wants to take an arcade machine and merge it with an EVT America Electric Trike, making those stylized five-spoke rims actually move. But that's only half of it. He plans to power the display with an iPhone 3GS and use it to render a sort of halcyon 16-bit view of the world ahead, with every road a 64-color dream lined with palm trees. A recent video showing off some of the tech is embedded below, and while we think this is about as likely to turn a wheel as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cabinet is to travel in time, we'll certainly be first in line with four quarters if it ever does.

Scooter's Speed Limit

ELECTRIC scooters marketed at children can hit speeds of up to 60km/h, according to online discussions.

Christmas catalogues from major department stores show the scooters are meant to have a top speed of about 16km/h.

However, popular websites contain detailed instructions on how to modify them to go more than three times as fast.

Kidsafe SA executive officer Helen Noblet said the scooters were dangerous even when they were just travelling at 16km/h.

"The serious injuries obviously are the head and face injuries and the common ones are wrist and forearm fractures," she said.

"You only have to be on a slight slope and the speed increases."

The manufacturers of the popular Razor scooters warn they can be hazardous and warn against modifications.

Ms Noblet said Kidsafe wants children to be physically active, but safer alternatives included non-powered scooters, bikes and skates, worn with the proper protective gear.

She said the main problem with the electric scooters was that while they are meant to be ridden only on private property, many people did not have the room to accommodate them so children ended up on footpaths and roads.

Linny, 8, of Milang has an electric scooter with a top speed of about 16km/h.

His mother, Sue Biggs, said training, supervision and a helmet were important.

"You have to make sure they know how to operate it properly. He is very capable and he rides motorbikes as well," she said. "We've got an acre block just for the kids."

As I was moving the car out of the driveway to get easier access to my motorcycle, my neighbor came up to me and said "I saw you come in on a really weird motorcycle thing yesterday and what is it?"

Never one to pass up an opportunity, I replied in my best B-movie space alien voice, "It is an alien space vehicle."

"Oh. I thought so."

Well, actually, it's a Piaggio MP3 500. Piaggio, perhaps better known as the manufacturer of Vespa scooters and owner of Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Gilera, and other brands, calls it a "maxi-scooter", and the MP3 series is unlike anything else except the closely related Gilera Fuoco, at least on this planet. The "3" comes not from any music formatting, but from three wheels. The rear wheel is conventional, if larger than the old-school scooter norm. The usual single front wheel is replaced by two, placed close together, and connected by a patented parallelogram multilink suspension system that ensures they turn and bank together. The front wheels can be locked by an electro-hydraulic mechanism so that the MP3 stays upright when stopped, with no need for the rider to put their feet on the ground. That locking system, and a parking brake, means that the center stand doesn't normally need to be used.

At $8,899, the MP3 500 is as expensive as many motorcycles.

Scooter safety becomes an issue

When a professional driving instructor suggested Jack Lucas wasn't fit to drive any more, the White Rock resident turned in his licence.

Two years later, he's found a new way to get around the town centre and up and down the hilly Semiahmoo Peninsula -- behind the wheel of his late wife's motorized scooter.

If he wanted to, Lucas, 87, could zoom through town at top speed, ride in the middle of traffic or head his own motorized scooter gang with the hundreds of others who ride "personal mobility vehicles."

That's because the Motor Vehicle Act is silent on motorized scooters and when, where and how they can be used in B.C. Although scooters have been around for years, there are no formal safety standards or regulations surrounding their use.

But that could soon change.

Following three deaths on Vancouver Island, the B.C. Coroners Service is asking the provincial government to amend the Motor Vehicle Act to define personal mobility vehicles and whether their users are motorists or pedestrians.

"There really is no limit where these vehicles are piloted at this moment...," coroner Jeff Dolan said. "What we want is to ensure these people are operating them safely."

According to the ICBC website, scooter users don't need a driver's licence, vehicle registration, licence plates or insurance, and can drive them on sidewalks or roads, following the same rules as pedestrians.

But the coroners' report said there aren't enough rules to keep all the riders -- whether they are using the scooters for health reasons or because of age -- safe on the roads.

Electric scooter 'zuums' into play

Self-described tinkerer and car enthusiast Tom Boyd was a successful salesman with no engineering training 3½ years ago when he came up with an interesting idea for a vehicle steered by its rear wheels.
Yesterday, the San Diego inventor zipped around a North Harbor Drive parking lot atop the first incarnation of his concept: the Zuumer electric scooter.

With one wheel in front and two in back, the Zuumer could be called a poor man's Segway or an oversized skateboard with handlebars.

“I like to call it the smart man's Segway,” Boyd said. “It's faster, maneuvers better and costs half as much.”

While the Segway never lived up to its hype, Boyd and colleagues from ZuumCraft Inc. hope to build a San Diego business by capturing a sense of “cool” with a scooter that can literally do circles around Segway.

They just completed a two-week trek on the scooter, from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to the San Diego-Coronado Bridge. In what was part publicity stunt and part demonstration of the vehicle's durability, Boyd rode along the coastal highway, pausing every 20 miles or so – more frequently when he had to climb hills – to swap fresh batteries.

The $2,195 Zuumer, scheduled to go into production in January, is capable of hitting nearly 20 mph and will go about 20 miles before recharging.

The scooter is considered a motorized bicycle in California, and generally can travel in bicycle lanes and on local roads where bicycles are allowed, according to ZuumCraft. It's also subject to local regulations and restrictions.

The Zuumer gets its power from an electric motor in its front wheel, but the steering is done from the back as the rider shifts his weight from side to side.

The back of the scooter turns separately from the front, like an articulated bus turning a tight corner. At the same time, the wheels lean into the turn, like a motorcycle, and they steer like a long firetruck with a driver for the back end.

WPD’s new scooter ‘a fast little thing’

It’s only been on the job for two days, but the Watsonville Police Department’s newest toy is already a hit.

Officer James Ihlen was out showing off the department’s T3 motorized, three-wheeled scooter Friday at the Watsonville Certified Farmers’ Market behind the plaza, as a steady stream of passers-by ooh-ed and ahh-ed at the device’s shiny lights and android-like body.

“It’s a fast little thing,” said Ihlen, a foot patrol officer, whose title is now quite misleading. “I’m kind of old-style, but it’s fun. It really gets around.”

The department unveiled the $10,000 scooter a few days ago. It is the only such vehicle in the department’s fleet, and is meant to be used by beat patrol officers and, potentially, parking enforcement.

Scooter campaigners take fight to equality commission

HUMAN rights activists are being asked to step in to the Metro scooter ban controversy.

A ban on all mobility scooters was imposed on the train system last month.

And now Nancy Porter has sent a dossier of Chronicle cuttings and statements from scooter users to the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

She claims the ban is in conflict with human rights and disability discrimination laws.

The Commission will now consider the evidence and decide whether to call an arbitration hearing.

Nancy, 58, of Falstone Square, Gosforth, Newcastle, has recently bought a £2,000 scooter.

“I’ve lost my freedom now,” said Nancy, who slipped a disc 13 years ago. “We want somebody independent to hear both sides. We really feel our human rights to be able to travel and live have been walked all over.”

Nancy, a former nurse, added: “I collected 1,000 names on a petition from people against the first ban. It’s affecting people’s freedom and social lives.”

A spokesman for Nexus today stood by the decision, which covers all Metro stations, adding: “We don’t believe our actions to be discriminatory.

“We have taken the decision to ban mobility scooters for safety reasons.”

The ban came after a series of incidents where users cheated death or serious injury.

Nexus imposed the new rule, which overrides the restriction laid down in April banning scooter users unless they were accompanied.

Defending the ban, Nexus chiefs released CCTV footage of scooters and their passengers shooting off platforms and ploughing through train doors.

In one, a woman was seen boarding a train and crashing through doors on the other side of the carriage on to the track – minutes before another train hurtled through the station on the opposite line.

Bernard Garner, director general of Nexus, said: “If a scooter fell on to the Metro line, its user could be killed. That risk is not acceptable.”

Nexus will review the ban in six months. There were around 200 to 300 mobility scooters using Metro trains before April’s initial ban on lone travellers.

There have been four accidents in the last 15 months in which scooters have fallen on to lines.

Piaggio to up production in India, launch scooters

Piaggio (PIA.MI: Quote, Profile, Research) will step up production in India and launch scooters in a market that is set to play a greater role in the Italian firm's global operations, its chief executive said on Tuesday.

Faced with a stagnant market in Europe, Piaggio is investing in China, India and Vietnam, and expects Asia's contribution to total sales at 30-35 percent by 2010 from about 20 percent now.

"The Asia-Pacific region offers immense opportunity," Roberto Colaninno said at a news conference.

"We are very positive about our growth in these markets -- they will play a major role in the group's worldwide vision."

Piaggio is looking at setting up research and development centres in Asia, including India, forging new agreements with key partners and tap more sourcing opportunities, he said.

A strategic cooperation agreement with Daihatsu Motor (7262.T: Quote, Profile, Research), for example, is being extended to supply components, engines and powertrains for Piaggio's light transport vehicles.

It has also entered a new agreement with India's Greaves Cotton (GRVL.BO: Quote, Profile, Research) for diesel engines for three-wheelers.

The maker of the famous Vespa scooter sells motorised three-wheelers in India and has launched a mini truck to take on leader Tata Motors (TAMO.BO: Quote, Profile, Research) (TTM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) in the fast-growing segment.

Electric bikes, mopeds and scooters currently come closest to matching consumer expectations in terms of cost, performance and reliability of any electric-drive vehicle now available.

They also come in a dizzying spectrum of styles, capabilities and prices from inexpensive "toys" to moderately expensive maxi scooters soon to debut in Europe and North America. A handful of prototypes are even powered by miniature fuel cells.

While toy scooters are coming under increasing scrutiny by local law enforcement, statutes regarding adult-sized machines generally coincide with their gasoline moped counterparts on a state-by-state basis.

Speeds are typically limited to 30 mph for all machines in this class, so what is more important is the size of the battery pack in terms of amp hours -- the more the better -- and sustained wattage output of the electric drive motor -- again, more is better (see guidelines below). Distance on a charge is a function of battery amperage, terrain, speed and the weight of the driver (and rider). Expect less than 5 miles out of "toy" machines and up to 25-30 miles for more classic motor scooters

Two words of advice: don't trust the wattage numbers proffered by many Asian clone scooter makers -- they are usually grossly over-inflated. Second, buy as much amperage and wattage as you can afford. You won't be disappointed.

Finally, a word of caution: making a business out of manufacturing electric bicycles and scooters is a daunting undertaking, especially for the North Amercian market where bicycles and scooters are viewed more as recreational diversions than serious commuting/errand running machines, as they are in parts of Europe. The likes of Ford Motor Company (Th!nk brand) and Lee Iacocca (EBike brand) have tried and failed to make a business out of it, as has Wavecrest Labs. TVS rolls out 7 vehicles, forays into 3-wheelers

TVS Motor Company, the country's third largest two-wheeler maker, today created a launch record of sorts in the Indian automobile market by rolling out seven new vehicles, including a three-wheeler and an electric scooter.

The products will be launched in a phased manner between October and November this year and the prices will be announced at the time of the launch, the company chairman and managing director Venu Srinivasan said.

The company made its first foray in the three-wheeler market with the launch of a 200cc, two-stroke three-wheeler in three versions � petrol, LPG and CNG (factory fitted). The company will manufacture these vehicles at its greenfield facility at Hosur, which has a capacity of 100,000 units per annum.

H S Goindi, sr vice president (three-wheeler), TVS Motor Company said, "The three-wheeler market has grown faster than commercial vehicles, and two-wheelers in the last five years at a rate of 18% CAGR. We feel that as the economy develops, the public transport system will not be able to cope up with the demand. A large section of the public will turn to autorickshaws for their transport. So, there is a big growth potential for us."

Indian three-wheeler output in 2006-07 was 5.56 lakh units, of which, the market leader was Bajaj Auto, accounting for 57% share. But during April-July (2007-08), Piaggio caught up with a market share of 41%, against 42% of Bajaj Auto. Bajaj Auto's products are priced in the range of Rs 56,000 to Rs 75,000 (ex-factory). TVS is likely to price them a bit lower.

Goindi said TVS aims to capture at least 30% of the three-wheeler market in the next three years.

He said the company will also come out with a cargo version of the three-wheeler in petrol, LPG and CNG platforms. The CNG and LPG market is rapidly expanding as more state governments are encouraging cleaner fuels. The company also intends to launch their autos in the 4-stroke engine category in the next 6 months in all the three variants, Goindi added.

The company also aims to export the three-wheelers and is looking at an opportunity to assemble them its Indonesia plant in about a year's time, Goindi said.

The cargo version of the three-wheeler would be in the diesel category at a payload capacity of one-tonne. The vehicle is fitted with a higher capacity engine with the peak torque at lower rpm to take care of gradability without frequent gearshifts.

Seen/scene: No roar, no smoke -- the Vectrix scooter is all electric

As the only owner of a Vectrix electric scooter in the state of Washington, Dave Denhart is in a world of his own. He whirs rather than roars down the street, emission-free, never needing a fill-up.

Vectrix Corp. hopes to see more urban commuters like him take to its high- performance, battery-powered scooters. The Green Car Co. of Kirkland, one of only six dealers in the country, had around 70 people test ride the Vectrix at an event a few weeks ago. The scooter has a suggested price of $11,000, excluding taxes, delivery fees, etc.

What else is different about this baby? It has no clutch, no engine and can go from zero to 30 mph in 3.1 seconds. Designed in the U.S. and made in Poland, it's faster than other electric two-wheelers -- reaching up to 62 mph.

Denhart, who commutes to Microsoft from his home east of Redmond, still owns a car and a "dormant" motorcycle. But he said riding the Vectrix makes an impact.

"Electric is a good way to start to get us away from the dependence on oil," he said.

And it's enjoyable, too.

"Part of the fun is you're cruising around and you're not hearing engine noise," he said. "So, you're like, 'This is cool in a Jetsons sort of way.' "

At 48, he fits the local customer profile -- male baby boomers with motorcycle licenses.

"Baby boomers are more willing to embrace something new and environmentally friendly. And they have the money," said Susan Fahnestock of The Green Car Co.

It's intriguing enough that Harley guy -- and self-described internal-combustion engine lover -- Bob Sternoff may buy one.

"It's a lot quieter than my Harleys, so it's something I can use without ear plugs," said Sternoff, a member of the Kirkland City Council. "I'll still wear my helmet that says 'loud pipes.' "

The steel load-bearing body, an element of continuity and the trademark feature of the Vespa, which sets it apart from any other scooter, has never been changed and this Vespa is no exception. The changes made to come up with the GTV concern all the details that have been modified over the years to keep up with technological and design trends in various periods. On the very first prototype in 1946 the headlamp was positioned on the front mudguard, moving to the handlebar in the mid-1950s. By placing the headlamp on the front mudguard once again, the Vespa GTV makes a clear reference to the origins of the Vespa, while the size and the lamp surface resemble the modern styling of the Vespa GTS. A similar change has been made to the handlebar, a simple, visible metal tube on the very first Vespa prototype. The GTV also uses a ‘naked’ handlebar, which however has a modern motorcycle-type look. The round analogue speedometer-mileometer has relatively retro graphics, plus a digital ride information display. The genuine leather saddle has visible stitching, emphasising the detail on this vehicle. PIERRE, S.D. - Gasoline pushing $3 gallon? Why worry? Buy a motor scooter like thousands of other Americans and stretch that single gallon of gas a week or more.

“As people start driving them, they start finding more reasons to use them,” said Doug Day, owner of Scooter Centrale and Vespa Hartford in Plainville, Conn. “They’re practical, easy to park and get great gas mileage. I put $5 worth of gas into mine when it’s totally empty, compared to $50 in my SUV.”

As gasoline prices soar, the popularity of peppy, fuel-sipping motor scooters — most easily get 50 miles per gallon and some of the smaller ones get up to 80 mpg — is soaring. Sales, estimated at 86,000 last year in the U.S., have doubled from 2000, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council.

“I put about 20 miles a day on mine, and I only have to fill it up twice a month,” said Jessica Meuchel, 23, who uses a scooter to deliver daily newspapers in Pierre, S.D. She bought the two-wheeler this spring because it was costing her $200 a month to fuel her truck.

Even the larger scooters are more economical to drive than cars, says Day. He says sales at his shops climbed nearly 200 percent last year and are doing well this year, too.

MIC spokesman Mike Mount said the market gained momentum when upscale Italian scooter maker Piaggio re-entered the U.S. market with the legendary Vespa scooter in 2001. Motorcycle makers such as Honda and Yamaha also began offering new lines of scooters in recent years.

Scooters were pioneered in postwar Europe by Piaggio, which made the first Vespa in 1946.

Gary Christopher, an executive with American Honda Motor Co. in Los Angeles, said Honda heavily promoted U.S. scooter sales in the 1980s, but annual U.S. sales peaked in 1987 and slumped after advertising was pared. They have long been popular in coastal areas and warmer climates, but more also are being sold in states with colder weather, he said.

“It looks like this new resurgence of interest in scooters is something that can stand on its own without massive injections of advertising and promotion,” Christopher said.

Although scooters are economical, the fun factor cannot be overlooked, Christopher said.

“There’s just something about a scooter that invites you to jump on it and go,” Christopher said.

Dwight Turner, owner of GS MotorWorks in Frisco, Texas, a large seller of imported motor scooters from China, attributed the fad in part to rising gasoline prices and the coming of age of youngsters who have graduated from popular foot-propelled sidewalk scooters.

“Many 10- to 13-year-olds bought those scooters, and then got hooked on the idea of riding scooters instead of bicycles and are moving up the scooter food chain,” Turner said.

Freshman tailback Caleb King and redshirt freshman tight end NaDerris Ward were arrested last month by campus police for traffic violations while riding their motorized scooters. King was driving the wrong way down a one-way street and had a suspended license; Ward passed cars on the shoulder and did not have his license.

Traffic violations have not resulted in missed game time under Richt, but he felt it was time to address the basics.

"Once you break a rule or break a law, you've basically lost control of what happens," Richt said Saturday.

Richt used former defensive tackle Darrius Swain as an example of what happens when you don't pay tickets or show up in court. Swain had repeat traffic violations on a suspended license and wound up spending 22 days in jail during the summer of 2005.

Former offensive guard Kevin Breedlove (1999-2002) is credited with starting the program's scooter craze. There were nearly 30 of them parked outside the Butts-Mehre athletic complex for Saturday's first practice.

Senior tailback Thomas Brown does not travel by scooter but doesn't understand why scooter arrests become headlines.

"A lot of guys think a scooter is a lot like a bicycle and that you can do whatever when you're on the road, but to me it's not that serious," he said. "Little things we do get blown up, I swear, 10 times more than anything we do positive, and we did a lot of positive things this spring and summer that never got in the paper. Any time we do something negative, it's put out there like, 'Oh, Georgia messed up again,' like it's a big catastrophe."

Joined at the hip
During Richt's first four seasons, the two assistants most joined at the hip were defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder and secondary coach Willie Martinez.

Now the most close-knit tandem is offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and offensive line coach Stacy Searels. Their inseparability is understandable considering Searels is entering his first season at Georgia and Bobo is beginning his first full season calling plays.

"They're like brothers out there," senior center Fernando Velasco said. "Everywhere you see Coach Searels, you see Coach Bobo. Everywhere you see Coach Bobo, you see Coach Searels."

Not needing respect
Despite being ranked No. 13 in the USA Today preseason coaches' poll, the Bulldogs feel they are not getting much respect. Georgia was picked third in the SEC East at the league's annual media days and did not have a single preseason first-team selection.

Now this is more like it, Peugeot. This scoot has more attitude than a dog with two sets of balls. Don’t get me wrong, I saw the point of the basic Ludix idea, but that frame and styling literally cried out for the full Monty. Looking even more like an extra from a sci-fi movie than a basic Ludix, the Blaster is terrific fun to ride on and a great way to get from A to B.

In fact, forget the commute to work, let’s just go for a blast. Not that it is the ideal commuter bike anyway unless you have little need to store anything bigger than a ham sandwich (Well, we know where you lost that - Ed) such is the sparseness of any storage. What you get in return is tremendous and addictive fun. What more would you expect from such a machine? Since it shares the same power plant as (and weighs much less than) the Jet C-Tech, we can safely assume before riding it that the Blaster is a speedy little thing (especially the derestricted version we have here). It doesn’t disappoint, with the speedo needle rushing off the end of the clock like a herd of lemmings over a cliff.
The short, stocky, ideally balanced wheelbase makes it handle well. It’s not as sharp as its physically bigger brothers, the beam-framed Jets, but still capable and extremely sweet to ride. With little weight to throw forward, the efficient liquid-cooled engine has maximum impact upon acceleration and this combination makes the Blaster a real joy to spend time with.

The styling has real attitude allied to a strong sense of purpose. From the wavy disc and single headlight to the wide ‘jet fighter’ style air intakes for the twin radiators, this scoot means business. The reverse exit exhaust looks trick, too, and follows the line of the steel frame tube perfectly, while the chunky 10in tyres make the most of the abrupt nose and empty rear end to emphasise the smallness of the whole package. With just a simple and understated Blaster logo adorning the black front panel, this is a machine that doesn’t shout too loud about what it is. But, then again, it doesn’t have to. With so little weight to manhandle around the twisties, the chassis is surprisingly nimble and accurate to ride to. It’s not up to the higher-echelon levels of excellence found with the new Jet C-Tech (after all, what is?) but certainly better than most scoots currently around.

Incredibly quick off the line, the Blaster takes no prisoners when accelerating, leaving auto scoots and most other modes of transport trailing in its haze of blue smoke from a standstill. It is, without question, the fastest accelerating standard scoot so far produced - and not by a small margin either. After the first hundred yards the Blaster will be way ahead of any other 50 and still going strong, such is the weight power shift of the pocket-sized Peugeot. Around town nothing will ever come past you in the race from the traffic lights. Come to think of it, few will dare to have a go when the road opens out a little either. The hard part is keeping the front wheel down when being aggressive with the throttle, and one soon learns to balance the bike on the rear wheel and have a ready finger resting upon the rear brake just in case.

It’s only when wheelying that we find the only real fault on the bike. The mirrors, although supremely stylish and fitting in with the overall look of the Blaster, are a bit too close to the handlebar controls, making stand-up stunts restrictive unless they are swung forward well out of the way beforehand. If this isn’t done, then your wrists will butt up against the mirror stems and possibly restrict your throttle control. Only a minor gripe but, as it is the only one we found, we felt we just had to mention it. Mind you, it could prove to be a great excuse for your defence lawyer. Just imagine it: -Your honour, my client informs me that, while accelerating away from the traffic lights, the front wheel rose unexpectedly into the air and he simply could not close the throttle as the mirrors were preventing its movement. Eventually, some 300 yards later, he managed to skilfully get back in full control of his machine and it is here that the police unnecessarily intervened.

The arguments will rage on forever between proponents of fuel injection and those preferring the good old carburettor. While there’s no doubt that the more modern way of throwing petrol into an engine can be faultless, one can also argue that the latest in the Peugeot Jet range, the normally aspirated C-Tech, is by far the better of the bunch to date.

Engine and fuelling arguments aside, the real jewel in the Jet’s crown is the chassis. As scooters go this is a pretty fine handling sports bike. Thankfully the machine comes with a pair of pencil eraser soft Hutchinson Funzy tyres providing all the grip needed to make the most of this rock steady and razor sharp beam frame.
Peugeot have, with this machine, established a new set of rules when it comes to scoot handling and hopefully the youth of today will learn to appreciate this ability to the full. Don’t just park up in town centres and talk scoots, or whatever it is you find to talk about. Get out, find some bends and wear some knee slider plastic out. It’s a far better pastime than any computer game yet invented, albeit a little more risky should things go tits-up!

The aluminium beam frame is light years ahead of the old style under-slung cradle tubing previously found holding the wheels of scoots apart, and the stiffness provided by one huge straight piece of metal running from the headstock to the engine mounts gives handling and road-holding beyond belief. With the shock absorber now mounted in front of the engine, the loads that this transmits are handled by the much stronger centre section of the frame rather that the very end of the rear chassis. This keeps the engine running straight within the frame and (as the wheel is, in turn, bolted to this) makes the mid-corner stability very sure-footed and capable of some impressive corner speeds.
The bouncy bits at each end are obviously perfectly matched to the chassis and someone over at the Peugeot R&D department has been putting in some serious track time in the pursuit of C-Tech excellence. The forks are stiff enough to keep the front wheel tracking true while still damping out the potholes and unevenness found on the roads in the UK. Likewise with the rear shock (can we still call it that if it lives in the middle?) This is just the right side of racetrack-like stiff but still compliant enough not to shake your fillings out.

Balance-wise the front/rear bias is spot-on, a rarely seen thing with scooters as the extreme mounting of the engine unit usually sees a large shift of mass towards the back end. But the frame and the large, eight-litre fuel tank serve to counter this, making the front end feel far more planted and secure when diving into bends and also when the throttle is cracked open ready for the exit. Overall the package works brilliantly, enabling the rider to really push and (with the help of those soft Funzies) explore areas not possible before with a standard, out of the showroom, machine.
Braking, too, is up there with power to match the chassis and engine perfectly. The large vented front disc has a bite that does not diminish with constant heavy use and is easily capable of hoisting the back end aloft even at speed. Thankfully the rear is a little less powerful and works in complete harmony and unison with the front to haul the Jet C-Tech up in no time should the need arise.

It really is a sports bike in disguise, such is the fine handling and ride that the scoot rewards you with. As if the ride wasn’t enough I reckon this scoot looks the absolute dog danglies, too. It takes all the very best design cues from the leading machines of the last few years and melts them into the modern and streamlined shape that we see here, not as aggressive as the single-minded Blaster, but more of an acceptable image to present to the world. Add to that the faultless paintwork and detailing and,for the money, you have one hell of a cool scoot.
Boys, if you can’t pull with one of these you are going to spend a lot of time pulling something else! Ladies, get one and you will know what the saying ‘flies around shit’ means instantly.

Jalopnik, the cool blog with the funny little name made a discovery back in July that Vectrix has some hydrogen fuel cell plans in the works. They sum it up like this:

Electric scooter manufacturer Vertrix is working up a fuel-cell powered machine that'll run 155 miles on a tank of Zeppelin juice. The 500-watt cell gives the two-wheeler a top speed of 62 mph and features regenerative braking to dump juice back into the NiMH battery pack. It'll also run on reformed methanol, or can be plugged into either a 110 or 220v wall socket.

Dudel, or as we know him around these parts "Scoop Doggy Dog", has a hot scoop for ya like a big 'ole ball of sticky rice (with a side of Hawaiian macaroni salad and some teriaki chicken... Man, I need to each some lunch and I wish we had a Noho's here).

As I was saying, Honda has some electric innovations of their own that hit the patent office today. Here's what Dudel has distilled from the 28 page report containing 16 patent claims and 20 drawings.

Everybody is working on electric scooter technology. Honda patented the technology for "a drum brake unit on a rear wheel rotated by drive force of an electric motor... fins act as a heat sink to dissipate heat generated by the drum brake unit, and to resist heat transfer from the drum brake unit to the electric motor, helping to more efficiently cool the electric motor."

Ahhh, I see. A rear drum brake / electric motor that efficently keeps its cool.

Under the seat you can see the power plug and a removable bed pan. Wait, no... that's a removable storage which can be replaced with a net if you prefer to air your goods in the wind.

All I can say is I'm REALLY digging all the effort the big guys are making... With Honda, Piaggio, Vectrix and others working to produce quality electrics all we need is a serious quantum leap in electricity storage and BLAM! Electric scooters will be zooming all over your town... unless GM makes an electric Hummer first... then the dinosaurs will live on.

Italian manufacturer Piaggio, the maker of Vespa, is set to become the first company to release a hybrid drive scooter following an announcement that it is developing hybrid versions of its Vespa LX, Piaggio X8 and Vespa MP3 (the carving three-wheeler) models. The new hybrid system, which has a working title of HyS (Hybrid Scooter), can operate in full electric mode with a range of around 20 kilometres as well as hybrid mode - whenever the rider needs to accelerate more aggressively, the electric motor kicks in, providing about 85 per cent extra performance. Piaggio’s HyS system is a parallel hybrid in which a combustion engine and an electric motor incorporated into the gearbox casing are mechanically and electronically linked and simultaneously supply power to the rear wheel. The system uses drive-by-wire and the in-built electronic management combines the two engines to offer not only better acceleration but also a significant reduction in fuel consumption (up to 170 mpg or 1.67 liters/100 km) and in CO2 emissions, only 40 g/km (using 65% the hybrid modes and 35% the electric one). Perhaps the most exciting prospect is the hybrid MP3 which enjoyed such success as a 250cc it has since been developed as a 400cc version and was recently shown as a stylish 500cc Gilera – a sportier hybrid version of the 500 would enjoy exceptional performance.

In this dual drive-by-wire type system, a sophisticated electronic management system interprets the rider’s request for more power, and selects the level of assistance based on the current level of battery charge. The HyS uses a regenerative braking system to capture much of the energy usually lost under braking and the scooter’s range can be further optimised in the garage by charging the battery from an electricity source using the 220V battery charger.

The automatic gearbox, electric ignition and automatic start provide the usual zip and ease of use in town as well as out-of-town trips. The gas engine offers sparkling performance in standard running, charging the electric motor all the while.

The Piaggio HyS uses very innovative, avant-garde technical solutions but remains incredibly easy and intuitive to use.

The rider uses all the normal controls (accelerator, brakes and additional handlebar commands) as well as a specific switch to choose one of the different operating modes: three hybrid, one electric-only and the reverse.

In the first three modes the HyS manages power output from the two engines, thermal and electric, using a drive-by-wire type system: the electronic management system (SGE) interprets the rider’s request for more torque and selects the assist ratio based on the state of the system (e.g. the level of battery charge). During deceleration and braking, the control system recovers and accumulates power that is lost on normal vehicles in the battery.

The three hybrid modes are conceived to optimize performances, consumption and battery charge.

The rider simply turns a handlebar switch to shut down the combustion engine and turn the Piaggio HyS into a silent zero-emissions vehicle that can go into areas closed to internal combustion engined traffic. Another turn of the switch and the petrol engine turns itself on and goes back to being the main engine, charging the battery as it travels through areas open to normal traffic.

Drive-by-wire technology not only allows the control system to optimally manage the combined power output of the two engines but also ‘forces’ the thermal engine to work when it can be most efficient, thereby reducing specific consumption, with obvious advantages in terms of lower consumption and emissions.

Multiple scootering world record holder Julio Languiller will be riding for his fifth world record, this time along Melbourne’s iconic Beach Road for 24 hours straight.

Mr Languiller said this 24-hour challenge on an unmodified 50cc Honda scooter, on Saturday 3 March, was designed to highlight the fact that scooters are an environmentally-friendly commuter alternative for inner city areas.

He will kick-off from the Mordialloc pier car park at 10am, travelling to Black Rock and back for the full 24 hours.

“This will be a tough ride because the scooter is only a four-stroke machine travelling at 53km per hour,” he said.

“My aim is to travel 1000-plus kilometres in this time, which means I am hoping to travel close to a one-minute kilometre.”

Mr Languiller’s first 24-hour world record was on a Honda Today (a four-stroke scooter), covering 809km on the streets around the Telstra Dome in 2005.

This record was toppled by another Victorian rider, who claimed a Guinness World Record last year, riding an unrestricted (or a modified), two-stroke scooter around a race track for 24-hours covering 981kms.

“You’re comparing apples with oranges here but needless to say, I want to better that record on the city’s streets, as that’s where these machines are in their element,” he said.

“These scooters you can ride all day and they’re fantastic around the city with the 50km/h speed limits. They’re incredibly cheap to run as they fill up on 7 litres of petrol.

“With this wonderful form of transport, you don’t have to worry about traffic jams, parking fees, city link tolls, and they’re the same cost as a reasonable road bicycle.”

Mr Languiller said while he expected to fill his petrol tank every couple of hundred kilometres, and once the challenge was complete, he would know exactly how much fuel he used.

His previous world records include three world records for 24 hour endurance rides on four-stroke Hondas; 50cc, a 125cc, and a 250cc, as well as riding around Australia on a Honda Silverwing in 15 days.

Along with giving up the free time required, to train so as to know how to react to these horrendous situations that they were placing themselves in.

I was talking to Robbo about feeling guilty in my safe but smokey home, stuck in front of the Tele watching people risk it all only a two hour ride / drive away.

The next day Robbo came up with the idea that we put together a ride to show our support and appreciation, so its all evolved from there”.

Robbo along with Alan Gerke (Captain of Portland RFS) and Bikebiz are proud to be involved in developing this into one of the major rides on the motorcycling calendar. Scooters have moved onto the racetrack with the motorcycle sportsmen of Queensland promoting scooter racing classes at the Ipswich Kart track, Willowbank. The recent boost in scooter sales throughout southeast Queensland has prompted the club to offer scooter owners the opportunity to ride their scooter on a race track and compete in scooter racing.

Practice nights on the 1080m bitumen kart track are held twice a month on the first and third Wednesday nights from 4pm to 10pm. The cost is $70 including a Motorcycling Australia recreational license.

Club member and scooter racer Paul Hallett said “This is a great opportunity for scooter owners to get out onto the race track. You can have loads of fun and compete with your mates in a safe environment, there are no cars and no obstacles and best of all no speed limits”

Race coaching by qualified motorcycle road race coaches is available free on either of the practice nights. The completion classes for racing are scooter 50cc and scooter +50 cc up to 250cc

The countdown to the nation's most demanding scooter endurance test has begun, with only two months remaining until the green flag is waved to signal the start of the third annual Le Minz 24 Hour Scooterthon at Parklands Showground on the Gold Coast.

The September 8-9 showdown is sure to be an energy-packed occasion, so it seems only fitting that organisers officially welcomed High Roller Energy as the event's major sponsor late last week.

The newest addition to the energy drink market, High Roller Energy is sure to be in great demand from a rapidly-expanding lineup of scooter riders, teamed up or going the distance alone in the ultimate test of reliability aboard the emerging method of transport.

Mark Petersen from Exhibition and Trade Fairs said the High Roller Energy Le Minz 24 Hour Scooterthon was shaping up to be a fun-filled spectacle with unprecedented interest.

Its been on the agenda since the start of the year, but I am really pleased to say that we finally have a date for proper scooter racing and a full on practice day prior to the event.

This is just the start, but lets get out there and give it a go !

There are no classes or divisions decided yet, or a race format, but that is what the practice day is for. To sort this out so we all have the most fun and bang for our buck.

ANY scooter or commuter bike under 175cc is welcome. Once we can see the field, it will be sectioned into common groups.

Bike must be safe in all common aspects, as there will be scrutineering.

Rider clothing is left to common sense. Helmets and full body coverage with protection is compulsory.

The event is NOT sanctioned by any official motorsport body. It is a fun event only with no prizes or awards.

Minimum age at this time is 14.

LAUGHING NEDS PULL OAP OFF SCOOTER

THREE young yobs dragged an 87-year-old disabled man off his mobility scooter for fun.

Police say the teenagers "laughed their heads off" as the pensioner shouted for help and struggled to get back up.

They then cycled off, leaving him helpless on the ground.

The neds were cycling in Rex Park, Dunfermline, on Wednesday when they spotted the old man on a path.

They caught up with him and blocked his way with their bikes.

One of the thugs then grabbed his arm and dragged him off the scooter and on to the ground.

After the thugs cycled off, two passers-by heard the pensioner's cries and helped him back on to his electric scooter.

Police are appealing to the helpful strangers to come forward in the hope that they will be able to help catch the thugs.

A police spokesman said: "This is a particularly nasty incident.

"We would like any member of the public who may have seen this incident to contact us.

"We are particularly interested in speaking with the people who helped the elderly man."

Two guys decide to travel the country, and become the Scoot Stars. Josh Hallman is from Greendale and Pete Bragiel is from Chicago. They talked about their experience on Thursday's Live at 11

Both are 24 years old and work in film. They live in LA and decided first to walk from LA to San Diego, which they did. You Tube picked it up and then they decided to do another walk. This led them to consider scooters. Together they left LA on June 13th, headed for NY. Along the way, the film each other and post their journeys on Intransit.tv

They can only go 25 mph so they don't travel the freeways. They stop in small towns and meet very interesting people and share their observations and experiences. Josh said they've seen some of the "weirdest things of his life" while on this trip. He also said one day he might be married and have a family and he won't be able to travel the country by scooter.

Their motto is "it's the journey, not the destination". Recently, one scooter broke down. After that, they both rode on one scooter for 1500 miles, later that scooter also broke down. A scooter company might give them new scooters.

They're currently in negotiations with some TV networks and Internet companies that want to carry their "show" or do some type of reality thing. After their scooter trip they intend to take some time off and consider the "business side" of their travels.

For their next "trick" or "trip" they're considering taking paddle boats the length of the Mississippi.

Piaggio has launched a new lid, which will appeal to both motorcyclists and scooter riders.

This ultra-light helmet is manufactured from ABS material and weighs in at just 950g, yet meets the latest safety standard (ECE 22.05).

The Italian design is apparent from the hand stitched eco-leather trim, which compliments the gloss paint finish to create a very stylish appearance.

Finding insurance cover for scooters can be a problem, particularly for cheap machines from unknown manufacturers.

Insurance firm Bikesure now has policies to cover the budget end of the scooter markets, including the steady stream of Chinese imports. As there are no Association of British Insurers rates to guide insurers to the specification and value of such bikes, it can be a problem getting cover. However, all you need to do is to point Bikesure in the direction of a company website to check the specifications of your bike, and cover can be sorted.

"There are some unbelievable deals around," said Bikesure's Robert Balls. "But buyers can have a dreadful time trying to fix up insurance for their bargain scooter. At Bikesure we've adopted a flexible approach to insurance on new machines so we are able to offer cover on previously unheard of brands."

If you've decided on a scooter to save money on petrol, you won't want to spend more on servicing than you need to.

The Twist and Go Service and Repair manual from Haynes covers scooters from 50cc-250cc and reveals that some expensive service jobs can actually be done by a beginner with some experience for a lot less cash.

Accessories company Givi has added a general purpose tunnel bag to its Gold soft-bags range designed to help scooter users.

This new bag is made of rope and retains its traditional bronze colour with a carbon finish.

Capacity is 19l, similar to that of several other top cases. The tunnel bag at 310mm long, 280mm wide and 230mm deep, does reduce in size so it does not interfere with the rider’s legs.

Having spent a winter ignoring my Honda Benly in the garage when I should have been preparing it for Spring, it looked like I might end up relying on lifts from my girlfriend for the foreseeable future. So you can imagine how happy I was to secure the longterm loan of a Gilera Nexus 500 to get myself back on two wheels. Picking up the scooter from Walton Road Garage near Hampton Court in London, I was impressed with the sporty looks of the bright-red Nexus. It definitely looks more sports-tourer than the other maxi scooters. And I was even more impressed with the remote unlocking seat, operated from the key fob. After all, everyone loves a gadget. Initial impressions were good once I'd reprogrammed my brain to having the front brake on the right lever, and the left lever operating a linked system which operates front and rear brakes at the same time. The 460cc automatic whisked me out of London towards the M25 without any fuss, and I started to get used to the riding position. But once on the motorway and heading to Peterborough I had more to think about. Scooter design isn't as stable as high speed as many bikes, and the screen appeared to be acting as a large sail, particularly with crosswinds from overtaking lorries. I'll be experimenting with the screen height, which is simple to move into one of three positions, to see if I can improve things. And I'll need to, because the engine will quite happily cruise above the legal limit if needed, with a top speed over 100mph if you can put up with the turbulence. It's only been a few days since I collected the Nexus, but I'm already becoming attached to it. I might get some stick for riding a bright red scooter, but it's easy and relaxing to use, easy to clean, and with a bit more practice and using the pillion footpegs, I might even start surprising a few of my bike-riding colleagues. A 250cc version has also been tested by MCN in the April 26, 2006 issue, but I'm enjoying the extra power once the automatic transmission picks up. Small scooters are known for being twitchy and a bit rubbish at going round corners – so imagine what this one’s like with three extra cylinders and 112bhp.

The 350cc V4 was built by Italian scooter builder Team Cristofolini Racing, and uses four aluminium 50mm racing barrels mounted on a custom built CNC aluminium crankcase and transmission. The exhausts are made specifically for this machine, and each cylinder breathes through its own filterless flatslide carburettor.

The mad motor makes 112bhp (the same as a 2006 R6), and is mounted in a modified chassis from a 50cc Malaguti F12

Piaggio launches new Vespa S

If any two-wheeler inspires as much affection as Fiat's Cinquecento it's the Vespa, and with serendipitous timing Piaggio is about to launch a second retro version of the 61-year-old scooter.

Called the Vespa S, it's based on the existing 50cc and 125cc LX models with styling revamped for a 1970s look. The leaner handlebar area is distinguished by a square instead of round headlamp while the mudguards are cut back to reveal more of the suspension.

But the most effective change visually is the removal of the bulky plastic on the inside of the legshield, revealing the shape of the steel chassis spine typical of older Vespas.

In the true spirit of Italian vehicle manufacturers, Piaggio can't tell us prices or availability dates, but expect it to cost about £2,000 for the 50 and £2,500 for the 125, with showroom appearances in autumn or winter.

We'll be reporting on the Vespa S in about a month (the press launch date has suffered from maybe-next-week-itus, too) but if you fancy a Cinquecento-matching Vespa in the meantime there's always the 250GTV, out since last summer and styled in sympathy with the original 1946 Vespa, including a period mudguard-mounted headlight, exposed handlebars and sprung saddle. That's available now for £4,011.

1,000 Vespa owners to gather in Seattle

You may have to dart out of the way, Rome-style, the next few days because about 1,000 Vespa owners from across the country will take to the streets of Seattle and beyond through Sunday.

Amerivespa, the 15th annual celebration of the classic Italian scooter, visits Seattle this year with group rides, meetings, an art show and numerous contests (including one on how slow a rider can go). The event begins Thursday at 6 p.m. with a "meet and greet" in Pioneer Square and ends Sunday on Vashon Island after a ferry ride.

Most events Friday and Saturday (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) take place in South Lake Union Park. Scooters on display will run the gamut from vintage machines to new models that can be test ridden. Attendees are required to register; for events not open to the public, the cost is $70 for non-members of the Vespa Club

Hybrid Scooter Would Run on Hydrogen

An industrial design student in The Netherlands has built a prototype scooter that is designed to be run on hydrogen.

Crijn Bouman of Delft University of Technology designed the scooter for use in inner cities.

He calls it the Fhybrid.

"The look and feel of the scooter are aimed at selling the clean technology inside," he said in a statement today.

The scooter has an electric motor powered by a (Li-)ion battery. If the Fhybrid is ever put into production, the idea is to charge the battery with a fuel-cell system, which would derive its energy from a tank of hydrogen. While scientists are working to make such systems more efficient, obtaining hydrogen (by splitting it out of water) is for now too costly to be practical. Scientists disagree whether it will ever be viable.

The prototype scooter uses a simulated fuel-cell to recharge the battery.

"A special course and various permits are required to build a hydrogen-powered engine. It wasn't possible to achieve this during the time period of my graduation project," Bouman explained. "The faculty is now trying to assemble all the necessary means to fully develop the hydrogen-powered scooter."

The scooter also recharges the battery by snagging energy during braking.

Since two-wheeled vehicles rely primarily on front-wheel braking for efficient stops, Bouman's scooter is front-wheel drive-better to capture the braking energy, he explained.

The Fhybrid has a top speed of 40 mph. Bouman says it accelerates faster than regular scooters and could travel approximately 124 miles on a tank of hydrogen.

Eco Geek Chic: Hybrid Scooter

While sales of hybrid vehicles continue to rise there are some places where even hybrid vehicles can feel excessive and over sized. Luckily, Piaggio has announced a HyS, which is a “parallel” hybrid scooter in which a combustion engine and an electric motor are mechanically and electronically linked and simultaneously supply power to the wheel.
In this linked gas/electric engine, the gasoline engine behaves like a normal catalysed four-stroke engine with excellent performance and distance range on the one hand and low emissions and fuel consumption on the other. Due to its "parallel" status, the hybrid scooter will be allowed into the restricted traffic zones in most cities and is still perfect for travel out of town.

Piaggio HyS will look like the well known Vespa LX, Piaggio X8 or MP3 models and will feature a battery charge indicator on the dashboard. The battery can be recharged from an electricity source by inserting a normal cable into the plug provided for this purpose. Charging time is about three hours. If that isn't geek chic, I don't know what is.

Toronto - Need to get around quickly? A Vespa just might do the trick. You'll see them all over the streets of Toronto as the popularity of the scooter continues to soar.

The scooter is a favourite for many reasons - it's more environmentally friendly, cheap on gas and parking, and can hold its own on the road.

The playful Vespa was even featured in this summer's blockbuster "Transformers".

Sarah Donofrio works at Motoretta, a Vespa dealership on College Street. She tells OMNI Television the goods are authentically Italian.

"All of the bikes we have here are made in Italy, they're all brought over from Europe," she said.

No matter how much you hate rush hour, enthusiasts say the ease of scooters make commuting a breeze.

Nashua man’s stolen scooter is returned

Wayne Demanche was so overjoyed when Elizabeth Cummings came by to return his stolen scooter that he kissed her.

“When I saw her come up the ramp. . . .” Demanche said as he reached out his hands and mimicked planting a big one on Cummings’ cheek. “I was just happy to see my scooter – my legs,” he said.

Two 15-year-old boys were arrested Monday for allegedly stealing Demanche’s motorized scooter from his Caldwell Road home in Nashua early Sunday morning.

At 12:45 a.m. Sunday, Demanche’s neighbor Liz DeCosta heard a crash and shortly thereafter saw teenagers driving down the street on the scooter.

“I saw there was a kid driving, a kid standing on the back and two running behind it,” she said.

The scooter was taken from the indoor porch, where it was had been charging overnight. The loud noise could have come from the scooter crashing into the corner of the access ramp, where part of the railing was reduced to splintered wood.

Four motor scooter riders announce 600-mile ride to Vermont from Maryland

FINKSBURG, MARYLAND - On August 20, four motor scooter riders are leaving from Central Maryland to undertake a 600-mile back-road journey to Central Vermont.

The destination is Randolph, Vermont to ride in the 140-mile Last Mile Ride that starts and ends there on August 25. The Last Mile Ride benefits and is sponsored by Gifford Memorial Hospital in Randolph.

"Both my boyfriend Dwayne and I grew up in Vermont, and I'm riding in honor of his father Charles 'Shod' McCullough, who died in February in the Garden Room of Gifford Memorial Hospital," says Crystal Waters, one of the organizers of the ride. "The Last Mile Ride is to benefit Gifford's end-of-life care, including the Garden Room, and it means the world to me to be able to ride in Shod's memory and raise money for this cause."

So far, Waters has raised more than $3,000 for the hospital, and will be riding her 150cc 2004 Vespa ET4 motor scooter to Vermont and in the Last Mile Ride.

A few weeks ago, Waters and fellow scooter-club member Pascal Girard started talking about how they would both like to ride from the DC area to Vermont before the Last Mile Ride on their scooters. Within days, they were planning the 600-mile ride. The riders' scooters, ranging in engine size from 125-250ccs, are legally registered as motorcycles, requiring a motorcycle endorsement.

Two other riders were asked to join them. Susan Dominica is flying in from Colorado to do the ride and is riding a borrowed 125cc Yamaha Vino. Chevon Jay from Baltimore faces a tougher challenge: On July 27, her 2006 Piaggio Fly 150 scooter and sole means of transportation was stolen from her back yard in Baltimore. Her fellow riders and scooter community are pulling together to find her a scooter and gear to complete the ride.

To encourage fuel saving and ease traffic congestion, city offers scooter slots at Prince Street Parking Garage.

Lancaster Mayor Rick Gray quietly rolled his little black motor scooter into a spot in the city's Prince Street Parking Garage on Wednesday, removed his helmet and was on his way to the office.
Well, almost. First, Gray had to stop and have his photo taken.
The mayor is hoping that other people will follow his example and ride scooters to work in the city.
As part of his strategic plan to encourage alternative forms of transportation, the mayor and the Lancaster Parking Authority quietly unveiled 15 free parking spaces dedicated to scooters in the downtown parking garage.
The small spaces are on two sides of the garage's curving exit ramp. The area had not previously been used.
Gray is promoting the use of scooters as a means of saving fuel, reducing air pollution and traffic congestion and easing tight parking.
"It's the future, and we see more and more scooters in town," said Gray. "I see no negatives and all positives."
Along with scooters, which can get more than 100 miles per gallon of fuel, the city is also encouraging the use of motorcycles and bicycles.
Tom Matthews, the Parking Authority's executive director, said the Prince Street garage is being used for a pilot program.
"We'll see how they're used," Matthews said of the scooter parking spaces. "If they're not used heavily, we'll add motorcycles."
If they are used, the Parking Authority will consider adding scooter spaces to its three other garages. It may also add designated scooter and bicycle parking areas to the new garage now planned for the 100 block of East King Street, he said.
It will not be as easy to add the scooter parking to the King Street, Duke Street and Water Street garages, he said, as there is not as much "dead space" going unused.
